Busy Weekend

With two on the way, we’ve been trying to figure out how to handle the cribs.  The difficult part is finding something that is not crazy expensive, and something that isn’t made of plastic.  When you actually get looking at the cribs, that is pretty much the only range that exists.  It’s one thing to only purchase one for about 300 bucks, but a whole other to get two for 6.

We’ve been looking at department stores for quite a while now, trying to get an idea of what we were in for.  For the longest time it seemed like we were either going to have to bite the bullet and spend a bunch on something decent, or settle for a lot less, and pickup a crummy piece of plastic.

I’m getting to the good part soon, I promise…

About a week or so ago, we looked up IKEA to see what they had, and found exactly what we were looking for.  The nearest IKEA to us is located in Illinois, about 3 hours away.  With the weather last weekend keeping up with its unseasonably warm temperatures, we decided that weekend would be the best time, especially since Kam will soon be not up for any sort of travel.

We got up at around 5am on Saturday, and headed out.  When we hit IKEA we found our soon to be cribs to take a look at them up close and see if they were acceptable.  Boy are they.  Solid real wood, nice design, and value priced.  Even better they were on sale for 20 bucks off.  We wrote down the location of the crib (at IKEA, most furniture you purchase needs to be assembled by you, thus comes in boxes that are located on the bottom floor stocked in asiles) and continued on through the store.

Also on our furniture need list was a dresser/change table.  Once again IKEA comes to the rescue and we find a dresser/chest that is perfect, with rails on top perfect for a changing area.  Since we saved so much on the cribs, and dresser, we splurged and picked up a matching taller chest for additional storage.  I’ll post photos in the gallery soon.

All and all, this was a huge load off my shoulders.  I really didn’t want to spend as much as it was looking like we were going to have to.  I am however paying for it now with a sore back due to all the lifting and assembling.  Small price I say.  The only crummy part about the whole deal is that we are missing one piece of a drawer.  I called up and they shipped a replacement, which we recieved right away, but was the wrong piece.  So today I’m going to call up and request another.  Hopefully we get the correct one this time.

One final note.  Now that the room is looking like a baby room now, I’ve been much more excited again.  Every little transformation I see around me is one more thing that reminds me of whats ahead.  From the now filled baby room, to Kam’s belly growing more and more.  Kam believes she is now feeling them, which is even more exciting.  It’s hard to explain, but somedays I experience such excitement and euphoria, only to feel nervous and fearful the next.  Will I be a good dad, can we afford everything they need…   I’m confident we’ll be fine, but I can’t stop the worrying, which is just me.
