34 Week Ultrasound and Appointment

May 19th, 2007

Friday was a long appointment because we had both a full ultrasound, checkup and group b strep test.  The strep test is normal for all pregnancies, just to see if Kam needs to take antibiotics before delivering.

The ultrasound was fun.  Kamie’s cousin, Roxanne works for the same hospital system that we have been going to and is friends with several of the people that work there.  One of the persons happens to work in the ultrasound area that we go to.  Well on friday we got to meet her finally.  She’s been visting this site and already knew us ahead of time.  Hello Mindy!  Thanks for making the appointment fun.

The ultrasounds are getting harder and harder to get a good shot of the kids.  This time again baby boy was hiding.  Didn’t really get a good shot of him.  However, baby girl was in a perfect spot to show off.   There are a few good 3d photos of her in the gallery.

Baby girl was weighing in at 4lbs 10oz, lying head down vertex position.  Baby boy a little behind at 4lbs 5oz, head up, breech position.  Both heartbeats are good.  Baby girl gave us a great scene of her practicing breathing.  It was very cool.  Baby boy was doing the same, but not as noticable.

34 weeks was our first major milestone.  Our odds of having to take the babies to NICU at St. E’s in Appleton are reduced.  They still may have to go, but odds are greatly reduced.  Since they were both practicing breathing was a great sign, showing that they are ready to do it on there own.  Kam had read that 99% of singletons survive without assistance or long term effects from premature birth at this point.

Kam had attended her first Mothers of Multiples meeting on thursday, and found out from several of the moms who have been through the experience that we will actually be delivering in the operating room, instead of the birthing room like we had expected.  So when we got to the checkup portion she asked our Doctor if that would be the case.  Unfourtunatly we found out yes it is.  It’s not horrible, and we are happy we found out ahead of time, but it would have been nice to deliver in the birthing room.  Oh well.  They do it this way to ensure they can do whatever is necessary a.s.a.p.  From what we’ve read and heard, we can deliver naturally at least for baby girl right now with her being head down, but baby boy could be trouble.

All it comes down to is that the twins have higher risks for problems during delivery, like the cords, the placenta, not wanting to turn, heart rates, breathing, etc.  So we need to be in the O/R to be able to get them out quick.  Because of all this Kam has had to reconsider the epidural for the sake of the babies, mostly wildcard baby boy.  Too many chances for needing a quick c-section, and other problems mean that for saftey of the twins, our Doctor has been suggesting that Kam gets one.  We’ll see how things go.  With any luck baby boy might finally turn around too.

Other then that the appointment was fine, Kam is doing great, and according to the doctor she is begining to efface.  Still doesn’t really tell us much though.  Could be tomorrow, could be 3 weeks.  Kam hopes it isn’t 3 weeks.  The uncomfort level increases daily.

That’s all I can think of for now.  Checkout the gallery for the latest photos.

Thanks for the shout out guys! I hope you don’t mind, I’ve been showing your babies off this week. Again, I’d like to encourage you to consider coming to St. E’s for the delivery, or at least be sure to stay at Mercy until Friday, because I can visit on Fridays when I work. Otherwise, make sure Roxanne gets some pics.

You guys really made my day. Your babies are going to a great family. What a blessing. What a double blessing.

    Thanks!
