House of Sickies and 18 Month Update

THis post is a bit old, it’s been in draft since 12/11/08 but we are due for an update, so it’s incomplete and older, but it’ll do.

We had a great Thanksgiving, an uneventful black friday and decided that Saturday to goto the Children’s Museum. We’d been once before and the kids loved it. As one last Christmas gift we bought a year membership- I hope we don’t regret it considering what happened next.

Kids LOVED it again, remembered quickly how to go down the slide, and played in the water, great fun was had. We managed to goto Hu Hot aftewards, a resturant we haven’t been to since I was pregnant with the kiddos. I managed to find the Black Friday item I was on the fence about really wanted for my birthday but was too lazy to get up - then regretted it when I got there 1 1/2 hour after the sales started and they were out. It was a good day.

Sunday was good too, we hung out around the house… just lazy family time.

Roll around to Monday. I had planned to go grocery shopping after the kids napped. James woke with a 104.2 temp, so we didn’t go and gave him some tylenol. I think I ended up going that night, James watched the kiddos. Lil James woke up just screaming just before we’d normally head to bed, not anything I’ve heard from him before. James checked on him, tried to calm him and realized he was really warm still. Took his temp and it hit 105.1 and I stopped taking it and I pretty much commanded James to get dressed we were going to the ER. James, being sensible and calm - did get dressed but said, can we call the nurse quick first. Hehe. So I did, they said 105 warrants a visit to the Dr, usually you need antibiotics for that high-take him to the ER.

So, James took lil James to the ER.
I stayed home with Evelyn who woke when James did, but laid back down to sleep on her own. It was 10:30 at night afterall.

I guess they did a chest xray on him which involved a Piggo-Stat Infant Immobilizer (otherwise known as a) contraption that he had to put his legs thru and then get strapped into somehow and his arms. Poor lil guy.

All he wanted the entire time was to be held by Daddy. They checked out other stuff, and did a throat culture, the rapid came back negative. But the Dr. felt he had a very mild, hardly there ear infection in one ear and prescribed Amoxiclilin.

Tuesday goes OK, but I ring the Dr to schedule the recheck that the ER Dr ordered. I get transferred to the nurse after talking to reception, she’s worried that James had urate crystals. I should bring him in that day versus the next. Ok.

We see our peditrican, he doesn’t think James has an ear infection but we are keeping him on the antibiotics as he’s still running a fever and out of it, must be something viral. Expect Evelyn to get it within a few days.

Wednesday was OK, James was still not feeling well and the diaper issues began. The ER Dr called and said that he had come back positive for the strep culture that takes 2 days. He has strep, so to keep going on the antibioticss, that’s what they’d have given him for it anyhow.

Thursday arrived and the diaper issues got worse. We all slept in though *the kids & I) until 11 at which point Evelyn awoke with a 107.4 temperature. I rang the Dr office, they got her in 20 minutes later. They told me to throw away the thermometer :P that she’d be like, almost dead/coma at that temp.

They did the rapid test on her, and it came back positive. Amoxicillin for her too.

Friday Evelyn starts getting this odd rash/blisters on her body everywhere. She had them the day of her 107 temp issue. They went away by the time we saw the Dr. Roseola perhaps? James gets some sort of rash, and a HORRIBLE diaper rash… horrible.

Saturday diaper issues begin for Evelyn and James’ get about as horrible as can be. We don’t leave the house. James throws up thru the night.

Sunday again, horrible diaper issue for James we all just lay around the house. Daddy James & I get sick late in the night. I ring the nurse about James’ diaper stuff, and his rash. Wondering if he’s allergic to the meds, they suggest pedialyte and give us some stuff and stop the amox for 24 hours, they leave some medication for us to try to settle his tummy and some triple paste (LOVE this stuff btw). Evelyn throws up before dinner.

Monday James stays home from work, less diaper issues, yey. Evelyn keeps having that silly rash, and not as bad diaper issues, but icky still. James’ rash is getting better but still there. We regive the amox to James and within hours the diaper issues return.

In the afternoon I ring the peditrican, they will see both the kids.
They switch them to something else, and duduce that Evelyn is allergic - and has hives. James is borderline, amox is the drug of choice for a lot of things. In a pinch, take it, diaper issues aren’t the wrost thing.

Both kids seem on the up.

18 month checkup.

Wednesday we see our peditrican again for their 18 month checkup.

I gotta say I love their DR, we’ve been really fortunate with getting lucky with good Drs without trying. Our Peditrican is a twin himself and has to love seeing the kids and thinking back on himself as a kid. I think he has a twin brother though-but still.

Anyhow, the kids are growing :) Good strong steady paces.

Let’s do James first.
Weight- 25 lb 4 oz - 25%
Height- 31 1/2 inches - 25% (I think this is wrong, he’s clearly taller than Evelyn by at least a 1/4 an inch-1/2 an inch. We measured them on the wall that night and that’s where he’s at…ah well)
Head Cricumfrence - 46.8 - 20%

Our lil man is still lil, compared to other babies his age. Though they really aren’t comparing that too much, more they want to ensure he’s on the right trend/path.

We had given James & Evelyn peanut butter when they were a year old, cleared by the peditrican to try. He started having a reaction to it so we stopped it for both him and Evelyn. The peditrican is actually advising us to remove it from the house alltogether in case someone would be here and give him some accidently. Eek.

Also, we’d noticed he was having a simillar but not quite so severe (though the PB thing wasn’t like horrible but we’d not given him much either so perhaps with greater quantity it would/could be) with eggs. So we are to stop that too. He doesn’t have the reaction with like bread or whatever, but like mayo or eggs in toaster strudels…. we even didn’t give him the flu shot because it has chicken egg protiens in it. :(

Now lil Miss Evelyn.

Weight - 23 lbs 6 oz - 40%
Height - 32 inches - 60% again I think this is wrong
Head Circumference - 47.0 - 60%

Evelyn’s plagio and brachiocephly are still there, but she is starting to round out a bit. It will be a very slow process and may never fully ‘pop’ out. But our Dr could feel a difference and also noted that her soft spot on top was still open - which was the concern with the cranio issue back when we took her to the specialist.

James had noticed in some of her photos a sort of ‘lazy’ eye, for lack of a better term. Our DR didn’t notice any issues, but a photo of the kids happened to be in the room we were in and you can clearly see her looking off with one eye - from a year ago. He gave us things to look for and to save photos for him that we see this occuring in. It isn’t something he can diagnois but he’d rather not jump the gun on this when it isn’t really happening too consistantly. She’d need to see a Pediatric Optometrist or is it Ophthalmologist… I dont’ remember. I guess the process is *very* technical, and involves some prisms and such… and so xx fingers xx that it is just a random thing.

Evelyn was able to get the flu shot though. So that’s good.

Whew! No more shots (well Evelyn needs another part of the flu shot in 4 weeks, but after that) until they are 4 for kindergarten!! INSANE I must say to think of them being in school. :(

Later that night, Evelyn threw up :)

It’s been one heck of a week and a half I tell ya.
